ABOUT COACH MIKE

 

Mike is a IBJJF Certified Black Belt and has been involved in sports and martial arts since his youth, training in karate, wrestling, Jeet-Kune Do, and boxing, in addition to competing at an amateur level in mixed martial arts (MMA) and over a dozen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. Having been raised in Hawaii, Mike is also an avid surfer, surfing all over the Pacific Ocean, including in Fiji, Hawaii, Guam, and throughout California.

 

Mike began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2003 at the NorCal Fight Factory in San Jose, California and continued his training under Fourth Degree Black Belt, Professor David Ginsberg in 2011.  Mike was awarded his black belt by Professor Ginsberg in 2019. Through his years in martial arts, he has had the pleasure of training with UFC, Strikeforce, Pride FC, and Gladiator Champions and veterans, including Bobby Southworth, Lil’ Dave Velasquez, Brian Johnston, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts Erik Benaquisto, Claudio Franca, and the former boxing coach for the University of Santa Clara California boxing team, Jose Uribe. Mike is also a Personal and Group Fitness Trainer. Mike is also a three-time NAGA champion and regular competitor.  Coach Mike has been teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu regularly since 2015 at the Ginsberg Academy of BJJ and MMA and as a Fitness Trainer, teaching bootcamp style and small group fitness training since 2013.

 

Coach Mike, under the tutelage of Professor Ginsberg, has served as a judge for the State of Massachusetts, judging Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Muay Thai Kickboxing since 2013, and is also certified as an MMA Judging Official under the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports. As a judge, Coach Mike and Professor Ginsberg, have had the honor of judging at UFC Fight Night 59, UFC Fight Night 81, and UFC 220 in Boston (2015/2016/2018). 

 

Mike's coaching style emphasizes safety, technique, and proper form for a variety of abilities and ages.  Jiu-Jitsu is meant to be fun and enjoyable to all, whether your goal is self defense, fitness and weight loss, or competition.  

 

Professionally, Mike has over 20 years of experience as an Urban Planner and Zoning/Code Enforcement Inspector managing and permitting a wide variety of development projects and currently owns his own permitting and construction management firm with his wife Alexis Mena. 

 

Mike lives in Stow, Massachusetts with his wife and two children.
